The Brief
For the Square to Square Bike Ride Spring 2023 event, I created an illustrated visual system celebrating community and movement along the Razorback Greenway. The project included event merchandise, winner medals, and way-finding graphics used throughout the ride.
The Problem
The Square to Square ride attracts cyclists of all experience levels, ages, and backgrounds. The event needed visuals that reflected its welcoming, community-centered mission while also functioning across multiple applications—from wearable merchandise to on-route signage. The challenge was creating a cohesive design language that felt energetic and inclusive while remaining clear and functional for event navigation.
Insight
The heart of the event isn’t competition—it’s community participation. Celebrating the diversity and personality of the riders themselves could visually reinforce the event’s inclusive spirit.
Design Intent
I developed a vibrant illustrated scene featuring a diverse group of cyclists riding together. Bright spring colors and a playful, groovy typeface bring warmth and motion to the design, evoking the joy of biking through Northwest Arkansas in the spring. The illustration system was adapted across the event t-shirt, winner medals, and way-finding graphics, creating a cohesive visual experience for participants throughout the ride.
Outcome
The final design system was implemented across event merchandise and on-site graphics, helping create a lively and unified visual presence for the Spring 2023 ride. Participants engaged with the visuals both during the event through signage and afterward through collectible merchandise and medals.
