After our initial interviews with parents of young children and a physician, we refocused our "how might we" question to "How might we implement inclusive queer education at home, starting at an early age?" With primary and secondary research, interviews and co-creation we created an outcome we're really pleased with. We compiled educational artwork about our bodies, relationships with others, and being the best version of ourselves into an interactive coloring/workbook. Each page has questions that were easy to understand for an age range 3-8 years old, followed by a series of questions for the parents. We also included a stack of picture cards with conversation starting topics on the back for parents to show their children. Our goal for these activities were to create a fun and (hopefully) painless way for parents to talk to their curious children about societally taboo situations that they may be confronted with. We were excited, surprised, and proud of the feedback we got back from the parents, as we received videos of the family interactions and written responses. I brainstormed future explorations of this project and hope that it may grow into something useful for others outside of our initial research study.
Below I included an image of the items included in the deliverables of this project. We wanted to include crayons, multi-cultural crayons, stickers and a toy for the children so they wouldn't consider this a chore, but something to be excited about getting involved in and seeing this as something to embrace.
